The Transition of Power

This inauguration had many firsts in our community. The first African-Indian-American Vice President. The first Second Gentleman. The first FEMALE Vice President. The Cabinet with the most people of color in it. The first time that a youth poet spoke at the inauguration. The first time that words of another language than English were spoken. The first time that there wasn’t a public audience. The oldest president to ever be inaugurated. And lastly, the first time in the 21st Century that the previous president didn’t attend the inauguration of his successor
This year's inauguration had a huge impact on many people. The transition of power this time around wasn’t as peaceful as we had hoped. Two weeks prior to the inauguration, extreme pro-Trump mobs stormed the Capitol leaving five dead. Many of the details regarding the event are too gruesome to mention in a school newspaper. Although we cannot confirm who incited the riots, all fingers point towards former president Donald J. Trump, who spoke incendiary remarks at a rally earlier that day. Following the event, he and his associates’ personal accounts on social media were banned and his second set of Articles of Impeachment were drafted. This makes him the first president to ever get impeached in the House twice. As of January 25th, 2021 at 7:00 pm, the Articles of Impeachment have reached the Senate to be voted on.

However, despite these events, the inauguration of the 46th President Joe Biden went quite smoothly. Many memorable events occurred that day. Historical norms were broken, and this was a day of victory for women, people of color, and immigrants, with the first female Vice President of color sworn in. Kamala Harris is now an important figure that many young women of color can look up to. J-Lo, one of the most prominent LatinX Pop artists, said “One Nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all” in Spanish during the middle of her song “Let’s Get Loud”. This was a monumental moment for the LatinX community as it was the first time that Spanish was officially spoken at a presidential inauguration.
To conclude, this year’s transition of power from the 45th presidential to the 46th president was quite eventful. It had its memorable moments that people will remember for many years to come. Although it seems as if this year the country is extremely divided, all this proves is that our democracy is far more fragile than we may like to admit. President Joe Biden has peacefully welcomed all biases and points of view of this presidency and has claimed that it is all a part of being American. America can start anew and welcome its 46th President.
