October - Ms. Peters (History)
Writer: Tawseef Rahman

Over these last couple of weeks, we have had some amazing, new teachers join our school. One of them is Ms. Peters: a history teacher at the IA. She teaches MYP World Studies, DP1 History, and our new product team Study Hall. I sat down with her to get an insight into her story.
Where did you work before working at the IA?
The previous school year was my first year teaching. I taught at the Divine Child Catholic School in Dearborn, Michigan. Prior to that, I did some volunteer work at AmeriCorps.
Why did you decide to work at the IA?
I was drawn to IA because of the amazing things I’ve heard about it from a former classmate. I also liked the IB curriculum, diverse environment, and the work ethic and motivation of all the students.
Why did you want to become a teacher?
When I was in college, I did not want to become a teacher. Instead, I wanted to work with other people. So, that’s what this teaching position allows me to do: to help other people. I am able to teach these students exciting things about history and get them motivated to learn about history.
What IB Learner Profile characteristic best suits you?
Reflective - I am very intentional on reflecting on every aspect of my life. At the end of each day, I think through my day and think about what did go well, what didn’t go well, and the interactions I had with other people. These reflections allow me to reflect on moments of gratitude, thinking about the missteps of my day and how to handle things better.
What is your favorite part about being a teacher?
My favorite part about teaching is when students who may have been struggling to understand a concept are able to suddenly understand it (moment of excitement for me).
What hobbies do you like to participate in outside of school?
My main hobby is performing Irish dance. I also like to read both fiction and nonfiction novels. I also love to travel to places.
How do you like being a teacher at the IA so far?
So far, I have had an excellent experience at the IA. Working at the IA has been an adjustment for me. All of the staff and students here have made me so welcome at the IA. They have made me feel like I belong in a welcome and supportive community.
